As a practising artist and a teacher with over 20 years of leading outstanding Art departments in London, I believe that Art is a subject to be enjoyed by all. My students, aged from 11 to 18, have gained excellent grades in both GCSE and A level, and overall have developed a love of Art and Design. As a moderator/examiner for a leading exam board, I am also aware of the assessment criteria and how best to reach the highest grades through structured work.
Art and Design helps to develop creative responses in all students; skills which can apply to most subjects and aid learning. I believe in teaching the formal skills through observation and understanding the principles. From this, you can develop ideas and experiment to find a personal creative style. Art and Design allows students to explore the work of artists through exploration and experiments, learning and refining new technical skills. The study of Art and Design should be enjoyable and help to build confidence; it is a fabulous way from which to communicate ideas and experiment whilst creating personal pieces. I believe that all students can engage with the subject and from it, apply their skills across the curriculum.
