As the start of term approaches, some of our newest students may be wondering what life is like at an online school and feeling the familiar ‘back to school’ nerves creeping in for a different reason. We’re here to share our top tips for joining an online school!
Starting at an online school can be a significant adjustment, whether you’re transitioning from a traditional school setting or moving from homeschooling to a structured timetable of learning. Luckily, life at CHS is really not that different from a bricks and mortar school, with live lessons, friendly faces and a familiar timetable (plus the opportunity to indulge your hobbies in your reclaimed time!).
Whether you are re-joining us after a long and relaxing summer, or brand new to online school, our staff have put together some top tips to help you succeed and thrive at CHS.
Create a Dedicated Study Space
A quiet, comfortable and inspiring space for study is one of the most important preparations you can make to begin your journey. Make sure you set up a designated area for schoolwork that is free from distractions. This space should be clutter-free and equipped with all necessary supplies (computer, notebooks, etc.). Setting up your space can be a fun and exciting way to get creative and benefit from a learning environment that is completely personal to you!
Establish a Routine
Treat your online school day like a regular school day. Wake up at the same time each day, follow a routine, and stick to your class schedule. Breaks will be scheduled in throughout the day, so make the most of the opportunity to rest, stretch, play with a pet and recharge- this will help you to maintain focus and avoid burnout.
Stay On Track
At first it may seem a little different being a master of your own destiny, but this is an amazing skill to take forward into your adult life. Teachers and timetables will lay out your day, but you can also think about using a planner to keep track of assignments or a digital calendar to mark important dates. Make sure you check in with class announcements and make not of anything you need to know on the assembly channel.
Be Active
Our students are all amazing at being active participants in lessons, and this really is the best way to make the most of your time at CHS. Engage in class discussions, ask questions, and participate in group projects. Being active in your online classes will help you learn better and connect with your classmates.
Turn On Your Camera
CHS has a ‘camera on’ policy as standard. Make sure you keep your camera on during live sessions, it helps you stay engaged and shows your teachers that you are attentive as well as building relationships with other students!
Reach out for help
It may feel a little strange at first not to see your teachers in person, but we are still here for you! Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers if you have questions or need clarification. Use Teams to check in with staff if you need anything. You can also reach out to classmates and join in some of our amazing extra-curricular activities.
Check your tech!
Ensure that your computer, internet connection, and software are reliable and up to date. Have backups, such as extra chargers or an alternative device, in case of technical issues. It is also important to familiarise yourself with the Microsoft Teams platform that we use across the school- it is very intuitive so you will pick it up in no time!
Self-care is king
As with any physical school, your progress overall enjoyment of the experience will be improved when you take time to look after yourself and reflect. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. Physical well-being is essential for maintaining focus and energy. Taking time for hobbies and real-world interaction is something we consistently promote to our students. With less commuting time and earlier finishes there are so many opportunities to enhance your online learning experience.
