Term has started for our new and returning students, and for online students everywhere, the importance of a dedicated study area is becoming a daily reality. We’re here to help you create the perfect study space for online learning.

A well-organised and thoughtfully designed study area can make a significant difference in your productivity, focus, and overall learning experience. Whether you’re attending classes from your bedroom, a corner of the living room, or a shared space, here are some of our favourite tips for creating a space that makes your brain happy!

Choose the right location

Selecting the ideal location for your study space is the first step. Look for a spot that is quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions. If possible, choose a room with a door you can close to minimise noise and interruptions. If you live in a busy household, consider using noise-cancelling headphones or a white noise machine to help you concentrate.

Invest in comfortable furniture

Comfort is key when designing that perfect study space, especially when it comes to long learning sessions (although you will have plenty of scheduled breaks!). Invest in a good-quality chair that supports your back and promotes good posture. Your desk or table should be at a height where your elbows can rest comfortably while typing. If you don’t have access to a desk, a sturdy table will work just fine. Avoid studying in bed or on a couch, as these can lead to discomfort and may make you feel too relaxed or sleepy. It is always a good idea to create a separation between study and sleep spaces, in order to stay focused and enjoy relaxation after school.

Ensure good lighting

Proper lighting is essential for reducing eye strain and creating a comfortable study environment. Natural light is ideal, so try to position your study space near a window. If natural light is not an option, use a good desk lamp that provides bright, even lighting. Avoid harsh, fluorescent lights and opt for warm or daylight bulbs to create a soothing atmosphere.

Organise your materials

Keep your study space organized and clutter-free to enhance focus and productivity. Use shelves, drawers, or storage bins to keep books, notebooks, and other materials neatly arranged. Have all your essential items—pens, paper, chargers, and headphones—within arm’s reach to minimize disruptions. A tidy workspace can help you stay on track and feel more in control of your learning environment.

Personalise your space

Make your study area a place you enjoy spending time in by adding personal touches. Decorate with inspiring quotes, artwork, or photos that motivate you. Plants can also be a great addition, as they add a touch of nature and can help improve air quality. Personalising your space makes it feel more welcoming and can boost your mood while studying. You can even invite your pet in for a stroke if they are well behaved!

Minimise digital distractions

In a world full of digital devices, it’s easy to get distracted. Keep your phone on silent or use apps that block social media and other distractions during study time. Set specific times to check emails and messages, rather than having notifications disrupt your focus constantly. Using a dedicated browser or user profile for schoolwork can also help you stay on task.

Maintain a clean and healthy environment

A clean and well-maintained study space can help you stay focused and feel more at ease. Regularly clean your desk, wipe down surfaces, and remove any clutter. Make sure to have good ventilation, especially if you’re spending long hours in the same space. A small fan or air purifier can help keep the air fresh and comfortable.

Equip yourself with the right tools

Having the right tools and equipment can make online learning much smoother. Ensure you have a reliable computer or tablet, high-speed internet, and necessary software installed. Invest in accessories like a comfortable keyboard, a mouse, and a second monitor if needed. A good set of headphones or a headset can also be invaluable for attending online classes and reducing background noise.

Set boundaries and embrace routines

Having a designated study space can help set boundaries between your schoolwork and personal life. When you’re in your study area, commit to focusing on your studies. Similarly, when you leave your study space, try to disconnect and relax. Establishing routines, such as starting your day by organizing your desk or reviewing your schedule, can help you stay consistent and manage your time effectively.

Incorporate break areas

While it’s important to have a dedicated study space, it’s equally important to have a separate area for breaks. Step away from your desk during breaks to stretch, grab a snack, or simply relax. This physical separation can help you recharge and return to your studies with renewed focus.

Get set for success!

Creating the perfect study space for online learning is about more than just setting up a desk and chair. It’s about crafting an environment that supports your learning style, minimises distractions, and enhances your overall well-being. By thoughtfully designing your study space, you can create a more productive, comfortable, and enjoyable online learning experience. Remember, your study space is a reflection of your commitment to your education—make it a place where you can thrive!
