A House to Call Home- The Importance of School ‘Houses’ in Building Communities for Students Online

From the halls of Hogwarts to your local village primary, school ‘Houses’ are a long-standing and much-loved tradition in the British education system. House competitions are a familiar concept to students at bricks and mortar schools, and we are no different! At CHS, our students take great pride in their Houses and compete on both effort and output to win House Points and add to their overall leaderboards.

How Does Our House System Work?

Our houses, Phoenix, Pegasus and Griffin, provide a place for students to build a real sense of community, mixing with children from Prep to Sixth Form to collaborate and revel in good-natured competition. Every student at the school will be allocated a House on entry, giving ample opportunity to connect with students from different year groups, backgrounds and locations.

Art With Heart

Our recent whole school House Art competition was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, both individually and as part of their House. In mid-September, our Deputy Head, Mr Boylan, announced the theme and medium via our busy ‘General School Chat’ thread on Microsoft Teams. Students were asked to complete a piece of art on the theme of “The Great Outdoors”. The artwork could take any form such as a painting, drawing or an artefact. The aim of the House Art Competition was to encourage students to show us through art what “The Great Outdoors” meant to them. It provided an opportunity to showcase their own country, town or village and a chance to champion our school diversity and to educate others on what the great outdoors looks like through their own windows.

Entries have been flooding in for House Art, and we particularly like this headline piece from one of our Level 3 students down under, Isabella Cuda (Griffin House). Of her piece she writes ‘I’m sure most of you can guess where my drawing is based. Is that Australia I hear? Well… you’re correct! This is one of our most beautiful animals from the great land down under. I see kangaroos almost every day. Their features are mesmerising and can be seen on most Australian coins”.

But What Does it Really Feel Like to be a Part of our School House System?

Being ‘sorted’ into a school House is a bit like joining a sports team but without all the running (thank you online learning). The House system is like Hogwarts without the magic—although sometimes it feels like it, with how quickly friendships form. Suddenly, you’re virtual high-fiving kids from different levels and year groups and working together on everything from quizzes to wacky dress-up days. It’s like being part of a cool mini school within your school, and every victory feels like winning the World Cup. Plus, there’s nothing like some friendly competition to bond over—and if it means you get to dunk your teacher in a virtual dunk tank for house points, even better.
