Joining Online School Mid-Year: Start at CHS This November

By October half term, families often have a clearer sense of how the school year is going. Perhaps your child has settled happily into their routine. Or perhaps the first few weeks have highlighted something that needs to change: classes feel too large, the journey to school is exhausting, or lessons are not providing the academic challenge they need.

Changing schools during the academic year can feel daunting, but you do not have to wait until next September to explore your options.

Cambridge Home School Online (CHS) welcomes enquiries for a Monday 2nd November 2026 start, subject to availability and a successful admissions process. With small classes, live teaching and a structured UK timetable, a November start could offer your child a fresh chapter in their education.

Why consider joining online school mid-year?

Every family has its own reasons for considering a move. Some children would benefit from more opportunities to contribute in lessons or ask for help. Others are ready for greater academic challenge, or would prefer to learn in a smaller classroom environment.

For some families, the practical demands of school have become difficult to manage. A long commute can leave little time or energy for interests outside lessons, while a move abroad may create a need for continuity in a British education.

Joining online school mid-year is a decision about the everyday experience you want for your child. It is worth considering what currently works well, what is proving difficult and what you hope a new school will offer.

These are all useful starting points for a conversation with our admissions team.

What is learning at Cambridge Home School Online like?

At CHS, students attend live, interactive lessons in classes of no more than ten. They learn from home while following a UK school timetable, with teachers leading lessons and students taking an active part.

A small class gives each student more space to be involved. They can ask questions, share ideas and contribute to discussions, while getting to know their teachers and classmates through regular contact.

Students attend with cameras on, and live attendance and participation are expected. This creates a consistent routine and helps teachers see how students are engaging with their learning.

Learning from home also removes the daily school commute. For families spending hours travelling each week, that can make a meaningful difference to the shape of the day.

Lesson recordings are available for review, helping students revisit an explanation or consolidate a topic. Regular live attendance remains central to the CHS experience. If you live overseas, we encourage you to review a sample timetable against your local time zone before applying.

Can my child join CHS in November?

A November start is possible, depending on availability, your child’s previous education and the outcome of the admissions process.

We take time to understand their current year group, academic background and reasons for moving. This helps us assess whether CHS would be a suitable next step and gives you an opportunity to ask questions before making a commitment.

A sample timetable can help you picture the school day. Consider how lessons will fit around your family’s routine, whether your child is comfortable participating online and how you will arrange a suitable space for learning at home.

Changing schools during IGCSEs or A Levels

For students already working towards IGCSEs or A Levels, a transfer requires a closer look at the courses they are studying.

Even where subject names are the same, exam boards, specifications and the order in which topics are taught can differ. We therefore need to understand what your child has covered and how closely it aligns with our courses.

This is particularly important for Year 11 and Year 13 applicants, whose examinations are approaching. Recent reports, current subject choices and exam-board details help us assess whether a transfer is practical and what additional work may be required.

Discussing these details early allows families to make an informed decision about a November start.

Will my child need to catch up?

Students joining after September may find that their new class has covered topics they have not yet studied. Equally, they may already be familiar with material that appears later in the CHS programme.

The amount of catch-up work will depend on the year group, subject and previous curriculum. During admissions, we will discuss any areas that need closer review so you and your child understand the expectations.

Small classes give students opportunities to ask questions, and lesson recordings can help them revisit material. Where additional study is needed, it is important to allow time for it alongside current lessons and homework.

How to apply for a 2nd November start

Contact our admissions team with your child’s age, current year group, country of residence and a brief explanation of why you are considering CHS. If they are studying IGCSEs or A Levels, please also include their subjects and exam boards.

We will confirm availability and explain the admissions process for the relevant school stage. For secondary and Sixth Form applicants, this includes recent school reports, a personal statement and a meeting with a senior member of staff.

Please get in touch ahead of your preferred start date so there is time to discuss suitability and complete the admissions and enrolment arrangements.
