IGCSE Geography

Description

International GCSEs are GCSEs which are suited to international students. Most fee-paying independent schools prefer them to GCSEs for this reason. International GCSE Geography is designed to enable pupils to explain and understand the geographical world around them. This highly valued qualification will evidence both pupils’ understanding of key theoretical principles and practical skills.

The International GCSE Geography syllabus enables pupils to progress on to A Level Geography which will open opportunities to study further at university.

Assessment

Teacher assessments are continuous during LIVE TAUGHT lessons, marking of coursework and assignments and summative tests.

Homework

Homework will be given at the end of each week, usually in the form of speaking, listening, and writing exercises.

Reporting

Parents have 24 /7 access to all of their student’s coursework. Teachers are available during term times to discuss student progress.

This specification is well-regarded among colleges and universities as it is well-rounded allowing learners to have a grasp of all aspects of human and physical geography giving a firm basis from which to springboard into A-level and beyond.

International GCSE Geography is split into three distinct areas:

Geographical Themes including

  1. Population and settlement
  2. The natural environment
  3. Economic development – worth 45% of the final grade

Geographical Skills testing

  1. Interpretation and analysis of geographical information,
  2. Decision making and
  3. Application of graphical and other techniques including the use of a 1:25 000 or 1:50 000 OS map with a key – worth 27.5% of the final grade

Alternative to Coursework questions

Completing a series of written tasks relating to field work scenarios taken from different aspects of the syllabus content. The questions involve an appreciation of a range of techniques used in fieldwork studies – worth 27.5% of the final grade.

All students will require a pencil, ruler (30cm), eraser, pencil sharpener, black/blue pen, red biro, green biro, pencil crayons (minimum – red, blue, green, brown, black, purple, orange, yellow, pink), a pair of compasses, a piece of string (30cm) and a protractor.  A basic calculator will also be useful.

Parents are responsible for arranging their child’s examinations at their local registered examination centre. Cambridge Home School students study from every part of the globe and so it is not practical for the school to offer a single venue to sit examinations.. Consequently Cambridge Home School is not registered with Cambridge International Examinations but has partnerships with examination centres registered with Cambridge International Examinations, Edexcel, OCR, AQA and will support students in locating a suitable venue for sitting their written and practical examinations.

Hi. I am Head of Geography at Cambridge Home School. I am a qualified secondary school teacher (PGCE) and educated to Masters level. I have many years of teaching experience in Geography and I am passionate about getting the most out of my pupils.

I  know about how exam boards work as I am an examiner for most of the larger ones. This is clearly advantageous to helping my pupils target high value criteria and in ensuring they attain their potential.
